Audio from videos seems "staticy"?

Recently I've found "some" of my videos have poor quality audio (and I'm sure they used to be fine!). Mac Mini OS 10.8.5.


Specifically, I recently played an .MKV file with VLC and it sounded bad. When I play it via PLEX Media Client - its fine. I then tried MPlayerX and poor again!

I transferred the file to a Windows PC and it sounds fine.

The fact that it plays fine via PLEX on Mac thru my Pioneer A/V Receiver just fine rules out HDMI connection/cable/AV Rcvr. But I don't really know what else to check or do with the Mac.


I'm sure it wasn't doing this recently because I've watched several videos via VLC and QuickTime and did not detect poor sound (although I wasn't specifically looking for it until now).

I also tried several other video file types (mov, wvm, avi, mp4, mpg) and some - not all - play with "staticy-tinny" audio.

I don't know if this will help you, but newer versions of VLC don't do well with HD MKV or TS on a Mac. Download 1.1.3 and open your MKV with this version of VLC and see if the same problem persists.
