I looked at my rental list and 33 of 46 movies on "short wait" which means anything from one day to one year. New releases are becoming as rare as gold bars. Seems unlikely but is Blockbuster any better? Is there any alternative to Netflix?

I'm not sure what you mean by "new releases". Is it recent movies or new additions to their catalog?

Redbox and Blockbuster Express kiosks have worked well for me renting new movies recently released on DVD. Selection is mostly limited to new movies, and it is not as convenient as Netflix, but I don't normally wait more than a few weeks to see something. ...and it is possible to browse online and hold movies until 9:00 PM at an individual kiosk.
