I'm a newbie who's tried hard to find an answer on the forum, in the how-to's, etc. but haven't gotten anywhere.

I recently downloaded wmv video files (with sound) from a copyright-free gov't site.

    The files include audio.

When I use ffmpegx to convert to mov, mpeg, avi, whatever (I'm on Mac G5), the audio looks great but the audio gets lost.

    What am I doing wrong?

I've hunted and pecked in the ffmpegx interface to figure out what to do.

    Does anyone have a suggestion?

    Thanks.

    Hi case,
here's a screen shot of the source file summary.

    The source file summary reads:
    video: wmv1, yuv4209, 640X280
    audio: wmav2, 44100Hz, stereo, 128 kb/s

I have noticed that the original file's audio only comes out of one speaker, if that makes a difference.

    What would you suggest?

    Thanks,
    Adam

I found a short WMV file with wmv1 video and wmav2 audio, and got these results:
Convert to MOV mpeg-4 (ffmpeg), Invert mapping: MOV has video+audio.
Convert to MPEG (ffmpeg), Invert mapping: MPG has video+audio.
Convert to MPEG (mpeg2enc), Decode with mplayer: only MPV (video) created.
Convert to MPEG (mpeg2enc), Decode with Quicktime: MPG has video+audio.
Convert to MPEG (mpeg2enc), Decode with ffmpeg, Invert mapping: only M1V (video) created.
Convert to AVI XviD (mencoder): AVI has video only.
Convert to AVI XviD (ffmpeg), Invert mapping: AVI has video+audio.
Convert to AVI DivX (mencoder): AVI has video only.
Convert to AVI DivX (ffmpeg), Invert mapping: AVI has video+audio.

So it seems you would be best off using the ffmpeg engine.
The ffmpeg engine wants video to be stream #0.0 and audio to be stream #0.1. Some video files, like many (all?) WMVs, have these inverted. That will cause the conversion to fail. To fix that, one can set the Invert mapping checkbox in the Audio tab.
