What is a safe working temperature for a hard drive?
I recently installed the ‘Speed Fan’ utility and, in addition to reporting the CPU temp, I was surprised to find that it also reports my primary hard drive temp. I have no idea how/where it gets that info (therefore how accurate it is), but several times it got up to 95 degrees F (when the room temp was about 82 degrees)… is this temp OK? I have a second HD installed below the primary one and air circulation is limited due to the close spacing (no choice there). I removed the case side cover which helps a little, but I’m thinking a case fan might be better?

My HD's are both showing up around 39C, right after boot up, with alittle use they both go up to 46C. So you might need to add another Fan, just to be safe...

95F is not unusual for a hard drive, most run warmer than that on the surface. SATA drives usually run a little cooler. I've had a few drives hot enough to burn my fingers. They didn't last too long.
If you can install a case fan in front of your hard drive, it will help considerably. Many cases have a place to put one. I have one computer with 5 hard drives with about a 1/4" spacing between them and two fans in front of them, and all the hard drives stay below 90F. Makes a big difference.
EDIT: Bodyslide, I think those temps you show are in C (Centigrade) 39C=102F, 46C=114F -
You may want to try one of these 2 fan removable bays if you are concerned about H/D temps, they fit in a standard drive bay:

I bought one a while back - noisy as hell and made no difference.

If you have room in your 5.25" drive bay, this configuration works nicely. And all of $10.

Thanks for the inputs. I guess as long as my HD stays below 100 degrees F, it should be OK. I'll check out case fans just to be sure.
