AG-1970 operation question

hi all,
what a great site... very glad i found it. used the vcr buying guide to get an ag-1970 to use to convert tapes to dvd, etc...

i've got it and it did not come w/ remote or user guide, but i'm fairly familiar w/ vcr's, etc...

my question is: when playing tapes, the sharp/soft slider does not appear to have any effect, and when i flip some of the buttons on the drop panel, no lights change in the display or come on, etc... i'm thinking that the panel may not be working, as i would think indicator lights would come on when switching in/out of mono, or such...

could anyone please enlighten... and then i guess my next step is to get a manual...

I have not found the AG-1970 operating manual online but you can download the AG-1980 operating manual here

and it is similar enough that you can get a leg up.

If you need a service manual you can buy the AG-1980 service manual (pdf download) for $19 at

and it includes the operating manual. The two are close enough that you can mostly get by with the 1980 service manual.

found my own answer.... no one else could ?!

the edit switch was on- thus disabling the sharpness slider and TBC switch.
