I rarely ever open Internet Explorer. I had a brain fart and clicked a link while in Outlook Express......DUH.
Every time I open anything with IE, every 30 seconds or so my mouse pointer turns into the hourglass for a second and I hear a Windows error sound. The only fix I've found is a computer restart.
Yea yea I know....I'm still on XP but DAMN I've always hated IE......the hate continues unabated.

For some reason, MS left XP with IE8, which was barely any better than IE6, in my opinion. At least they could have made IE9 available,
it was introduced long before XP got the chop.
IE is an integral part of the OS, perhaps you've got some file problems. Have you checked application or system messages in the event viewer?
Does it do it if you logon as another user ? -
I remember checking the Event Viewer that last time I was STUPID but saw nothing that was occurring(or had occurred) about every 30 seconds.
Speaking of stupid(me)....I never set up any kind of "login" with this computer. I just turn it on and go. I'm sure I did something of the kind when I installed the O/S all those years ago but I'll be damned if I understood it all. I push the button and it goes.....every day for damn near a decade now I guess.

It 'sounds' (pardon the pun) like you have some add-on installed which only baulks for IE.
IE is (pls do not laff) my browser choice. Never had the issue you describe. -

Try DB83's suggestion first. I've seen add-ons do all kinds of weird things that affect the system.
Start button/all programs/ accessories/system tools/ IE (no add-ons) -
I recall upgrading IE7 to IE8 once or twice on XP and every time I ran it, it was stuck in "first run" mode asking me to set things like my preferred search engine (I think). And I kind of remember there was some other annoyance involved, but as a result IE7 is as far as I go with XP now. It's not like I use it for anything but emptying out the occasional files that appear in the temporary internet files folder despite the fact I don't ever use it for surfing.

It's a bit of a process of elimination, for example you could
create a 2nd user (control panel/users), logon and see if IE still messes up.
You could try the command SFC /SCANNOW from the run box
Then there's MS automated tools such as this one.

Nothing is the event viewer that corresponds to the time stamp the error occurred? -
This seems to have fixed the problem:
I opened IE, went to a website, shut down IE and no problems.
Of course however, the single website I went to resulted in IE locking up completely.
Typical IE (on my machine). I don't give a damn....as long as opening IE (even by mistake) no longer
interrupts everything else I do on my computer until a restart.
THANK YOU for the tip.
