I've had a very interesting couple of weeks.

So, for all of those who have captured all those analog sources to some kind of video file (usually .AVI at a low resolution), I can verify you get what you have. I did an initial test run of a VHS converted video file into a low resolution .avi file and performed a 1080i/p real time capture.

The first problem you're going to run into is deciding whether you're going to use the YUV or RGB settings, both of which have drawbacks. Your YUV uncompressed 1920x1080 avi stream is going to eat at least 500GB for an hour, and none of the editing software packages out there (including FCP and AVID) can handle that file size. Reverting to the RGB (M-JPEG) capture settings produces a more compact file size (around 25GB), but the capture will expose any and all artifacts, so plan on doing some extensive video filtering editing work (whether you're using FCP, Adobe, or Avid).

End of the day, the better quality of your analog source makes the difference. I recommend getting your analog video off its existing tapes (I want to meet the idiot who decided VHS was a good video format... since it was designed originally for audio).

Hello everyone,

I've become more and more interested in the restoration of VHS tapes. I bought some prosumer Panasonic SHVS decks lately and I've been googling around alot for the last 1,5 year. The videohelp.com forums have helped me alot, so today I've finally decided to create an account over here.
I started playing around with VirtualDub and some filters. Since a few days ago I started experimenting with Avisynth since it seems to have much more powerful plugins and scripts.
I've discovered the great GTGMC deinterlacing script for example. None of the virtualdub filters even come close to this one.

Now I'm facing a weird effect when restoring some VHS tapes. Here's an example:

I'd like to get rid of that white stroke around the edges. I've been playing around with chroma shifting plugins but haven't had much luck...

This is my current avisynth script:

Code:

AVISource("D:\test.avi", true) #PAL VHS Capture
QTGMC( Preset="Medium" )
SelectEven()
ConvertToRGB32()
LoadVirtualDubPlugin("C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\virtualdub\plugins\NeatVideo.vdf", "NeatVideo", 3)
NeatVideo("C:\AVS\test.dnp", "C:\AVS\test.nfp", "1.0", "3", "1", "0")
ConvertToYV12()

Would someone help me build a script to reduce the grain a little bit, anit-alias the edges perhaps?, perhaps thicken the lines a little (FastLineDarken didn't work very well), remove the dot crawl and enhance the video quality in general?
Here's a sample. (remuxed in mkv, but untouched video) : https://mega.co.nz/#!ZIZWgCRB!Qq-C7SOpY-isOs4NrknB8V-igehojp7L-tqhoNne4Sc

I am in Sydney and trying to find a place where I can hire a Umatic player.

I have called many audio-visual places but they don't have them anymore.

I have seen one I can buy a Sony 5630 but would prefer to hire for a day or two only.

I think when I transferred it before I ran it through my Hi8 or min Dv at the time. Would that have been right as I can't quite recall - memory at my age :-)

I just found n AverMedia AVerTV USB2.0, maybe I used this. Which would give the better quality?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

the sound is perfect, however it has "squashed" the video file to nothing more than a thin line in the center of the screen, it appears to play perfectly well, just that the picture doesn't stretch to the screen.

any ideas?

I mostly work in adobe for my video editing/improvement needs. I am here to solicit help of the gurus here, and pay for your help. I would be happy to upload the film in your preferred format, and will pay to learn how to fix this kind of thing (if it is indeed fixable). I am also happy to pay a guru to fix this for me. Please send me a message stating your terms, and lets see if we can get this fixed up.
I'm sure I'd like to brighten it a bit at least(which I can do already with VDub filters) but I'd like to get some die-hard AviSynther's opinions for this video.
My end result will be MPEG2 with PCM audio, hopefully frameserved from VDub to MainConcept(?)

Hello guys.
I need help with technical video issues because searching the internet I could not be helped properly or be sure with confidence.
I deliver my works on dvd (PAL EUROPE), but I would like sometimes upload any of these clips work to youtube, vimeo.
One case requires interlaced video, while the other progressive. It is more efficient of shooting progressive and convert it to interlaced, as many say. But watching the result of the conversion from interlaced to progressive to dvd, I realise that it does not have the same smoothness as an already interlaced video.
We work with camera Panasonic AG-HVX200E and I dared to shoot for the first time with 25p and 50i (576). The properties of clips see both interlaced (lower fields). When I import them to Adobe Premiere, the suggested sequence is with lower fields. At metadata again I see lower fields. How can it be explained; The only difference I could find between the two clips through their properties, was that at the 25p indicated pulldown 2:2.
1080p properties refers to the progressive, but the pulldown 2:2 too.
What's going on? :confused:

Ive only ever tried to rip and encode one other PAL source and it did this ghosting thing too. I ended up just letting it go because I couldnt get rid of or reduce it. It seems all PAL DVD sets do this, Im guessing because the footage was sped up to 25fps.

Ive tried QTGMC(preset="slow") but it really isnt helping me a noticeable amount.

Is this just me or is that PAL and Im gonna have to deal with it?

Heres a 1 minute video sample.

I was encoding a restoration from avisynth into FFV1 codec, at about 93% it failed on my face, so what I normally do on this cases is load the encoded avi into avisynth, and find out the encoded number of frames. Then finish the restoration of the missing frames in another FFV1 file, join the two parts in avisynth and feed to x264 for encode.

The problem is that this time this avi is not working for me. Avisynth gives me errors using avisource, diretcshowsource says:

Code:

DirectShowSource: Could not open as video or audio.

Video returned: "DirectShowSource: unable to determine the duration of the video."

Audio returned: "DirectShowSource: RenderFile, the filter graph manager won't talk to me"

(New File, line 2)

And virtualdub:

Code:

[!] AVI: Index not found or damaged -- reconstructing via file scan.

but actually shows nothing. Yet I can play the file on MPC-HC

This is cut from a BDMV that I have: http://oi42.tinypic.com/6qg0hs.jpg

Its like in the pure black scenes that the color like fluctuates or moves...I thought it was banding, but am just not sure... I can provide a clip of it in motion if need be.
