I will be filming outdoor marching bands (low light with lots of motion) and indoor concerts. I don't want to go crazy, and would like to stick with a prosumer unit. Am I better off with the Sony HDR-PJ790V or the Sony nex-vg30h as my main unit? I know Canon has a new units coming out in June, but I've always used Sony equipment? My current older model, an HDR-SR12, will be used for B footage, or cross field footage.

Can someone recommend a path for me? I don't need xlr inputs, however I would love to have two additional mics that will be field level, then sync up the sound when finished. I've read pluraleyes shoud assist me in the syncing.

I was also thinking of getting a new gopro2 unit instead of my older sr12, which has always has focus issues in low light.

Thanks for any ideas nd recommendations.

Hello!

Hello!

The PAL or the NTSC AVCHD camcorders record cleaner video picture at the same bitrate?

Forexample: PAL Canon LEGRIA HF G30 or NTSC Canon LEGRIA HF G30 ?

Because I like to capture video frames as pictures....

My concept:
Pal record 25p/50i 50p, the NTSC record 30p/60i/60p pictures/sec, therefore I think the compression ratio/frame of the NTSC camcorders are worse. Do you know such comparisons?

But: Is this true in practical life?

Thank you fro your reply!

Hello all, hoping you can point me in the right direction.

I'm looking for a camcorder that will allow me to capture games played on a 9' or 10' pool table from above. Not necessarily straight above, although that would be nice, but generally the lights are in the way, or ceilings are too low to allow this angle without a crazy wide-angle lens.

Generally, the camera would be mounted on a wall or tripod at the foot (racking) end of the table, as high as possible without losing either end of the table out of frame or behind the light.

Light is generally fairly good on the table, but not necessarily great, so reasonable low light performance would be good. I need the entire table to be within the DOF.

I'd like at least 720p, 30fps, but more of each would be nice, SD card storage, remote control. Obviously a standard 1/4-20 tripod mount.

I would buy used or refurb without qualms and keep the budget under/around $350. Lower is better, but I want decent quality. (I realize these are generally incompatible.)

I don't need 500x digital zoom, but the wider at the wide end, the better, actually. Adding a separate wide-angle lens would be OK, as long as the fish-eye distortion isn't out of hand. I want it to look like we're playing on a rectangle, not an egg.

I don't know what other questions to ask or specs to throw out, so please, feel free to throw out ideas!

Cheers, and thank you,
Chris

Good day all

I hope this is the right place to post this, if not, please feel free to move admin.

I am looking at to D-SLR cameras. Lower end of the range, for taking photos, but with the intention of shooting 'behind scenes' footage (as they can do HD).

The two I am looking at currently are the Canon EOS 600D and the Sony Alpha A37. I know these are slightly dated, but this is because of where I am, and this helps keep the prices down.

All the searching I've done (and viewing on comparison sites) seems to point to the Sony performing better in lower light for video (and having autofocus, if ever needed) while the Canon seems to be the more popular. The Canon also comes with a additional lens.

Does anyone have experience with these two? Any pointers, comments, especially about video performance?

Thank you in advance :)

Should I use a digital camera as a camcorder?
The main purpose of the camera is for family videos, but image quality is still very important to me.

In researching camcorders to buy, I've found that camcorders have smaller sensors than digital cameras.

My current point and shoot digital camera can record HD 1080p and it has a 1/2.3 inch CMOS sensor.
The Canon Vixia R400 camcorder can record 1080p has a 1/4.85 inch CMOS sensor.

My digital camera has a bit rate of about 22Mbps while the R400 has a maximum bit rate of 28 Mbps for AVCHD and 35Mbps for MP4.

Would I get a better video image quality using a camcorder?

Will the lens and higher bit rate of the camcorder make up for the smaller sensor size?

Hi everyone
I am writing as I am about to purchase my first analogue to digital video converter. First and formost, I have a huge lot of old VHS-SVHS-tapes, betas etc I'd like to digitise. However, it is of the oddmost importance that there is no quality loss during this process. In other words, the dv-result digitised into my pc should be of the same quality as the vhs/beta source. Therefor I also dont mind shelling out some more cash in order to be able to convert in a deasont quality
I dont plan on dooing any reall colour corections myself afterwards, or anything like that, I just want to digitise so that they end up in the quality that is present on the video tape.
I've looked around for satisfying sollutions, and a converter that seem to be able to handle the job pretty nicely, according to reviews is the Grass Valley ADVC 110 unit. one feature I especially like about this is that it has locked audio, which should mean that I hopefully will not have to deal with sync issues if captured correctly. However, according to the specs, it seems to have been around for quite some time thoughw, and I was wondering if there perhaps were any newer models out there that could do a better job? I've of course been onto the grass valley website, but they still seem to promote this unit.
Also, it would be quite nice with more inputs, so that I, say, could digitise for instance 2 tapes at once in order to save time.
Also, apart from this digitising projekt, it would also be great to bbe able to hook it up to say, a satellite receiver and record a HD movie via hdmi or series for later burning on to BD. However, these units dont seem to have hdmi?
I was wondering if anyone inhere could reccomend some alternatives to the grass valley, or is that model currently the best one out there for my project?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions you might have.
All the best from allan

The Sony HDR-CX430v has a serious design flaw. The attachment points for using a tripod or a grip handle are backward to the normal configuration. The camcorder has a place to screw the camcorder to a quick mount shoe and an alignment pin to keep it square with the tripod. On the CX430 the position of these two items has been reversed.

The result is that the Camcorder cannot be attached properly to any standard tripod or grip handle. You must order a Sony's tripod specifically designed for the CX430. This is a ripoff designed to force you to buy a Sony tripod which you can only use for one specific camera.

Even the Sony GP-ATV1 grip will not fit properly. The grip must be put on backward and the controls are in a very awkward position. :(

Hello this is my first post so to introduce myself I am a newbie to video. I have a little experience with still photography only on a hobby basis though. I have been looking into getting my first digital camcorder and I need some help.
I have to admit the more I research them the more I get confused. I like the Cannons based on what I have read so far. I would be shooting video mostly for family events and vacations but would also like to do some youtube how-to videos (I have a lot of hobbies), I also like to photograph wildlife but not a priority.
My starting out budget is $500.00. I was wondering opinions on getting something like a New Cannon vixia R400 or a used Canon Vixia HV40 HD Camcorder. Or any other suggestions would be appreciated. Should I stick with new or look at a little higher end used cameras?
Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.
