I've narrowed it down to an Nvidia 660ti and an AMD/Radeon 7950. I chose these mainly because of the pricing and performance. This pc will be for future HD video editing and some gaming. My main issue is all the reviews I read generally seem to be very similar so I thought why not come in here and ask some opinions from users of videohelp. Anyone in here have either of these? What are your thoughts on the brands you might have? quality...reliability etc

This could just be me, but I got quite depressed when looking at the Desktop Computers at the Future Shop Canada website. I like Windows 7, and most of the computers have Windows 8 on them, and there is nothing about that new OS that appeals to me. Most of the desktops don't have HDMI out and that is something I think is desirable in a computer. I was thinking of getting another desktop as a spare, but maybe it is for the best I can't find that just right computer, as I should not deplete my meager savings. It seems that these Tablets are really having a big impact; they don't appeal to me. Maybe a laptop is the way to go next time, but they have that unappealing Windows 8 on them as well.

Hi Folks,

It's Philip 17in monitor and big enough for my use. Of course, I can go get a new and bigger one on cheap. But thinking of the landfill and the environment, I decided to repair it. My first hunch was the power unit. I found 1 exploded cap and 1 leaky cap and a blown fuse. I replaced these components. When I powered up, the fuse blow. Next I decided to replace bridge rectifier and power transistor. The transistor is confirmed bad i.e. all pins are shorted. I powered up again but this time around nothing happen.

Did my first power up that caused the fuse to blow damage other components ? Did it fried the logic board ? Just a hunch, what other components should I look at next ? If it's logic board, then I will get a new monitor.

Thanks in advance.

PC restarted as I wrote...f@#$ me...

The short: I have 4 drive, 1 SDD drive with OS and programs on, 1x 2TB drive with important files, 1x 1 TB drive with photography files, 1x 250GB with my Lightroom Catalog (Photography related).

I didn't realize until today that my 1TB drive was missing. I've had issues since my new build. Slow to start, stuck on Startup screen, etc. even with a SSD drive. But, I decided to do some editing and it took me a couple of hours to realize 'my 1TB drive is missing'.

Is shows up in my BIOS, all 4 drives. A few times, after some cable swapping and port swapping, it didn't...but it seems I've found the perfect combination (Or so I thought). Now, all drives are up but anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 or 3 hours I get a sudden restart without a BSOD. It just restarts OR shuts off/down completely (Kinda like my wife...I can only say that here:mad:)

I wrote this once, thinking I could get by, but since I couldn't without a restart I decided to unplug my 1TB drive (I've got it all copied to an external drive).

I don't think it's the drive, I can't figure out if it's the MOBO...but I wonder if it's because of the PSU since I've got all this hardware (Although I would think I had the power...only after unplugging the 1 drive will I really know...kinda...)

Is there an app to test PSU quality? How about HDD quality (The Western Digital software says my drive is fine...even though it caused major issues before) How can I truly know??

Worst case, I see myself sending in my HDD for a new one (Free)....then getting a new PSU (Money)...then a new MOBO (Money and more time than I care to waste...but will anyways)...

Any advice?

Is iLivid a good program to install ? One of the Windows 8 problems that I have is that most of my software that worked on XP do not work on 8.
Will be very thankful for a reply, I'm so tired of have to click on a link 3 or 4 times to get to the information I want..

I am compiling a bunch of my videos I've gathered from over the years onto one of my 2tb harddrives. This is another backup and it will not be my sole backup as I'm keeping them on the original harddrives it came from and I have them on dvdr.

I am currently transferring them from source drive a to my computers internal harddrive and then after that is done copying them to my destination 2tb drive.

I am sure I can plug both drives in and transfer from drive a to drive b in one shot. However I am dealing with several gigs of data. I don't want to chance anything going wrong during the transfer.

I have successfully copied my data dvdrs to my destination drive without first copying the dvdr files to the pc and then to the drives. But I don't feel as confident going from usb to usb without a firm landing zone first.

These aren't irreplaceable it'll just be a hassle to start over if something wacky were to happen while going usb to usb.

Basically is it doable? Are there any pitfalls of doing this on-the-fly so to speak?

I only need to do this with a handful of more folders on the source drive so its not an endless project. But I would like to know for the future if its safe to go from drive a to drive b over usb without first loading them to an internal drive.

Thanks.

And fyi I don't have a problem with the extra time it takes to copy from the internal drive to the destination drive. Its just if in the future its ok to go from usb to usb I will do that then.

Edit - its actually from three sources - a usb harddrive, some dvdrs and an internal drive - I'd already copied stuff from the internal drive and some of the dvdrs its just the other usb harddrive I'm working on right now.

I had a Lenovo B560A (intel i5 520M , 4GB DDR, Nvidia 310M GPU), and I could use Sony Vegas with the preview playing smoothly in it in case of Full HD 50p files. The video playback in players was not always smooth, there were occasional jumps, but at least in Vegas in could use the preview effectively. This latter thing would be my most important expectation. That the preview would be free of jumps in the editor. Does this setup above pass the limit? I know the processor is a weak point there. It is weaker than the i5 520M, but the 635M GPU is much more stronger.

I have a 2 rail Power Supply fixing to be used on a build and I wondered, what connections on the PS go to what rail? Obviously the main power connectors into the motherboard are one but are there others that go on the first rail or all the rest go to the 2nd rail? I have a Video card that has its own power connectors and I read somewhere that the video card connections on power supplies(if they have their own seperate ones...modular) usually go with the 2nd rail but I wondered, if you have a video card that plugs into just the pcie with no power connection needed...i.e....the motherboard provides the power...what rail is it using? I'm not sure if using a video card with no separate power connectors is the way to go if it and the processor/mb is going to be using the same rail etc...since power is split between the 2 rails I don't wanna tax or max out the rail....Single rail power supplies don't have this issue

any input would help :)

I know I've done this in the past but I'm not having any luck for some reason.
Every computer in my house only has one user setup in Win7 and none of them have passwords.

I want to skip the user logon screen when booting up or coming out of sleep mode.
But I still have to click the user icon or hit return for windows to start.

In the run box I typed netplwiz for the user accounts popup.
'users must enter a user name and password to use this computer' is unchecked.

also confirmed in registry
Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Key: SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Name: AutoAdminLogon
Type: REG_SZ
Value: 1 enable auto logon
Value: 0 disable auto logon

I thought this was all that had to be done... am I forgetting something?

Not the end of the world on my regular computers but I really don't want to have to do this on my HTPC or in my MAME cabinet....
