Hi all,

First post so hopefully in the right section. I am an avid Australian based movie buff and purchase many dvd and blu-rays. Up till now I have used a region-free DVD player to play US DVDs however I am wanting to play US Blu-rays as often they are cheaper than the UK Blu-rays or sometimes the movie may only be available on US blu-ray. I am aware that the Blu-ray region coding is different to that of DVD however the cost of getting modified blu-ray players in Australia is on the expensive side so have been looking for other options. I thought of buying a cheap US blu-ray player but then would have to fiddle with the power. I do however own a western digital mini media player that has a USB input for external drives. Sooo... would this accept a USB powered portable Blu-Ray player? If so, I assume a US one would be able to play US blu-rays. Your advice would be appreciated.

Thanx

David

Greetings .....

DISCLAIMER -- Although mention may be made herein of DVD recorder units, the specific issues discussed deal only with playback capability.

I have long been aware that CD Data Discs with MP3 files are playable on most modern DVD players, but now I am becoming aware that DVD Data Discs with MP3's are also playable, provided that the DVD player supports such playback.

I happen to possess two DVD players, the Magnovox MDR513H / F7 and Toshiba DR430KU player-recorders, each of which will properly play back DVD Data Discs with MP3's. Each unit will also display (in full text, not just numbers) the full list of available folders as well as a list of individual files in each folder.

If anyone knows of other DVD players which support playback of DVD Data Discs with MP3's, please list such players here.

Regarding Blu-Ray -- While I have no experience of any kind with that particular medium, I would still be interested to know if any current players support playing of CD, DVD and Blu-Ray data discs with MP3's.

SPECIAL NOTE -- For best results in any unit that can play back a Data Disc with MP3's, it is recommended that such discs should always be burned at slow speeds (CD at 16x--if not lower, DVD at 6x).

BTW, I am also aware that ...

(1) Some DVD and BluRay units have USB input ports to allow an external device to be connected.

(2) In some cases with a USB external Hard Drive, any such device that is self-powered (IE, has no AC adapter) may not function properly when attached.

(3) There is a limit on the number of folders and individual files stored on a disc or external drive that a DVD player can properly handle.

(4) Some units may have ports for flash cards such as SD/SDHC, as well as ports for other storage mediums.

Thanx-A-Lot, Frank-0-Video

Hello.

New to the forum and new to Bluray players as well.

I recently bought a Philips BDP7700 and the device is basically not working at all. The player is connected to a TV via HDMI cable and I can get to the device's home screen menu.

I tested the player with five or so different Bluray discs (Avengers, Skyfall, Transformers 3 etc) and not a single one of them plays. The player becomes totally unresponsive as the player moves from the Home screen to the actual disc content. I had to unplug the power cord to shut it down. I repeated the process a few times with multiple discs, but with the same response.

The furthest I got was with an audio cd: the music played for 8 seconds until the player jammed.

I assumed this was a software issue so I wanted to do a software update. The current software version of the player is 3.17. And the newest version available is 3.71 (http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/cpindex.pl?ctn=BDP7700/12&hlt=Link_Software&mid=Link_Software&scy=en&slg= eng).

I don't have the possibility to connect the device directly to the network so I tried to perform the upgrade via a USB.

I downloaded the software zip from the aforementioned link, extracted it and copied the the "UPG_ALL" folder, with the BDP7700.bin file inside it, to an empty USB stick: USB ROOT\UPG_ALL\BDP7700.bin. I started up the player and I plugged in the USB to port in the back of the player. Then went Home --> Setup --> Advanced --> Software Update --> USB.

The following message appeared on the screen: "Now searching upgrade software. Please wait.". And that's it. The player was stuck with that message. I waited and waited, but nothing. The player did not respond to any commands from the remote. There was no message to "Start" the upgrade process. I attempted this multiple times.

I tried the same thing with two other USB sticks (with FAT and FAT32 formatting), also with the player's front USB port. The player simply keeps showing the message "Now searching upgrade software. Please wait.".

I've also done the factory reset and repeated the above attempts to play a disc or to perform the software update. It doesn't help.

So, the only thing I can do with the player is get to the Home screen, but that's it. It doesn't play Bluray discs and you can't update the software.

I've written this same information to a Philips support forum (http://www.supportforum.philips.com/en/forumdisplay.php?80-Blu-ray-BDP7000-Series) but the topic has not yet been approved and is not visible on the forum.

I'm also still waiting a reply from the store I bought the player from.

Anyone have ideas on how to proceed?

Thank you.
