As I'm the only one in the family with a modicum of computer knowledge I have been given a very old home video that has been digitised and the audio which has also been digitised - unfortunately approximately the first 2 minutes of the audio are missing so I'm going to have to leave the first two minutes of the video silent which isn't a major problem.

I currently have the video in an .MP4 file (this is how the owner supplied it) and the audio is just a .aac file. They seem like strange file format selections to me - I would have assumed that they would be .avi and .mp3, but I have to work with what I've got!

Is there a simple to use (and free!) tool (which works under Windows 7) out there which will allow me to manually sync the audio to the video? Something which will allow me to view/hear both simultaneously and perhaps move a few sliders/timer settings to manually sync them up? Then of course I need to dump them to one file (.mp4, .avi, whatever).

Thanks for any help anyone can offer - I'm a total 'noob' at this kind of thing. :)

Which HD file type would be easiest to edit? MP4?
Would I be able to export the finished videos as .f4v files without losing any quality?
Roughly what file size would a finished 10 minute video be?
Any suggestions on how I should go about, using as few steps/softwares as possible, but receive result where the image is not shaking? Preferrably without having to convert the VOB files to AVI and then back to VOB again...

Hi I'm searching, reading, testing, but I can't find a solution. I hope you can help me.

What I want is to re-encode videos with ranges (so I want to cut and reencode them). Example:

Input: video.avi
Output video.mkv

But I don't just want to convert the complete video - I want to reencode only specific time or frame ranges in one output video. Example:

(h:m:s) - 00:00:10 to 00:00:30 AND 00:01:00 to 00:02:00 AND 00:05:00 to 00:10:00

Alle the ranges (or cuts) in one step in one output file. I tried it with ffmpeg but it seems it only can handle one time range, not several ones. I could encode with the above example three videos and then merge them together, but it seems that would mean I have to encode 3 mpgs and after that reencode all of them to one mkv. This is quite slow and a lot of encoding.

Is there a way to encode multiple time/frame ranges with ffmpeg or another command line encoder in only one encoding step? How would you cut a video and what command line tool would you use?

Hi,

I have unedited videos in different formats, from different countries - getting close to 12 TB.
I edit them, sync the audio, join them, encode them and output mostly into mp4 formats for youtube and other live websites. I use adobe premiere cs6.
When I initially started doing this, for WEBSITE no1, I had to put their logo, their intro video, etc, and output it and upload to their cdn or yourubt/vimeo. I would alternatively save the final mp4 files on my hard drives. Also I would save the original files and also the adobe premiere project files.
I initially had a 2TB HDD, then got a a few more, then got a few more 3TB. I had to move around the files and therefore all the project files and media files are messed up.
The websiteno.1 is now being phased out and I need to create new mp4 videos with new logo, watermarks, intro, etc. I believe I have to go through the painful process of editing them as I did in the beginning - which I plan to do.
But this time, I want to be smarter and have a method of saving the full content - without the watermarks, logos, etc. so that I can reuse them again for website no.3 and youtbe channelno. 16, etc. I dont think just saving the adobe project files, and keeping all the media int he same folders is the best solution. Or is it?

What would be the best format to save it to, so that I can get the file back into adobe, and then for each website just add the logos and intro etc... Do I still keep the original files from the camcorder? What would be the best solution / workflow?

Original files are in various formats - mts, avchd, mp4, etc... many are in different sizes, resolutions, fps, with audio, without audio, etc...

Is there a way to multi select a lot of files at once - or better yet have it monitor a folder (though either is fine)
I have used both VLC and Windows Moviemaker and they both seem to have qualities that I like but I am having a difficult time trying to get them do what I need.

Concerning frame-by-frame, any time I try to set it up that way in VLC, it seems to restart. For Moviemaker, it will not let me use this function (perhaps I'm clicking the wrong thing) despite reading that it can. What am I doing wrong?

Also, is there a way for me pause the video and toggle between frames using the directional keypad? I am trying to detect very minute differences in facial muscles that would occur very quickly and it would help me if I could check for that. If not on these players, what would be some good ones for me to use?
